Large-scale Wi-Fi site surveys causing your back and biceps to hurt?

Performing large-scale, on-site walk-through site surveys, carrying a laptop, can get to your back, biceps, and posture. Many of us have walked through huge hospitals and universities, and inventing all kinds of straps and backpack-style solutions for balancing the weight of the laptop.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a lighter-weight alternative? Perhaps something easier to use and more affordable, too, so that you could equip more engineers with these solutions?

I sure think so.

    Hi Jussi,

I thought it was just me! Am working on something at the moment that hopefully can be built from easily purchased items from the local hardware store. It is inspired by one of my mates at Ruckus. I’m adapting his idea to suit my need. Will share here if it works.

Oh, absolutely John, do share it when you can! Would love to see that.

To provide a light-weight alternative, I will ship you a copy of Mobile Survey 2 (released today) at the end of next week, in case you happen to have an Android phone or tablet.

  3. I’m waiting for a tablet running Windows (maybe Win8?) that supports my stuff; and a cradle with some suspender-like straps.

    • ekahau says:

Andras, I agree that Win8 will be a great thing for this in the long run.

Before that, I’ll ship you a copy of our just-released Mobile Survey 2 (valued $399) late next week when it’s ready for shipping.

It’s an Android tablet/phone based site survey / heatmapping solution. It allows you to perform surveys on those one-pound tablets, and visualize the coverage immediately. Or, you can export the survey data to Ekahau Site SUrvey for more detailed analysis and reporting.
